History and Collections
Hermann Struck (1876-1944) was one of the most important artists in the field of printmaking in the twentieth century.
Throughout over four decades of his work as a successful well-esteemed artist, Struck has created a plethora of works on paper, focusing on two main themes: portrait, and landscape. In his famous portrait series Struck has commemorated the greatest intellectuals and scientists of his time, his portraits include the most famous portrait among the Jewish community of his time – the portrait of Theodore Herzl.
His works reflect the vibrant spirit of change in the early decades of the 20th century, tradition side by side with a changing world of progress and industry, the Jewish Shtetl alongside the Zionist dream and a diverse mosaic of characters and landscapes.
Struck’s house, which was built in 1924 and designed by the renown architect Alexander Baerwald, was also used as a studio and workshop for his pupils, who specialized in various printmaking techniques. Over time, the house was designated for preservation. In 2013, Brown-Shlomi -Carmi architectural firm drew plans to restore and preserve the building. In 2014, the building’s restoration and preservation was completed in detail and in accordance with its original style.
The museum’s strives to shed light on the different aspects of Hermann Struck’s life, on the complex layers of artistic production as well as his cultural and social endeavors. The museum’s exhibitions combine pieces of furniture and rugs, personal artifacts, books and Hermann Struck’s oil paintings from the Nathan Bernstein Collection (Struck’s nephew), alongside works from the museum’s collection. In June 2014, a creative printmaking workshop was opened on the top floor of the museum. The center offers creative workshops including printmaking and engraving, as well as sculpture and painting. Changing exhibitions are showcased along the workshop. These exhibitions explore the medium of printmaking as one of the main tropes in Struck’s oeuvre that also makes it relevant for the artists working today.
The museum offers family activities, including: guided tours about Struck’s life and work and the art of printmaking, lectures by artists, events and meetings with prominent representatives from a gamut of cultural, artistic and intellectual fields.
